How this stair carpet cutting plan generator works
This tool generates a practical carpet cutting plan explanation based on the sizes you enter, using a standard carpet roll width. It is designed to reflect how carpet is normally planned and cut in real installations, not just simple area calculations.
The plan prioritises:
Keeping stair pieces grouped together where possible
Using offcuts from landings and halls before adding extra length
Minimising waste while keeping cuts simple and workable on site
Where possible, stairs are planned from one continuous length, which is then cut lengthways into strips, rather than cutting each step individually.
For general UK stair construction standards and dimensions, you can also refer to official UK stair design and measurement guidance from NHBC.

How to measure a stair carpet
Step length should be measured from the back of the tread (horizontal part) to the bottom of the riser (vertical part), following the shape of the step.
Stair pieces are assumed to run down the stairs, with the pile direction correct over the nosing.
When measuring length or width of a hall or landing, it’s advised to add at least 10 cm to each size to allow for trimming during installation.
Important notes
This is a guide only and should always be checked on site before cutting.
Staircases and layouts can vary — use your judgement where features such as winders, returns, or unusual shapes are involved.
If you’re unsure, always allow a little extra carpet.
